Pop-Up Wetland Brings Nature to Life for Pupils at Queensmead Primary

Pupils at Queensmead Primary School in Leicester were given a unique opportunity to connect with nature, thanks to a special “pop-up” wetland experience delivered in partnership with the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT).

The immersive installation, which transformed part of the school grounds for a week, provided children with hands-on learning and the chance to explore a rich wetland environment up close. The initiative came about following Greenwood Academies Trust’s involvement in the national ‘11 Million Postcards’ campaign, which aims to ensure children from disadvantaged and underserved communities can access enriching summer experiences.

As part of the campaign, pupils from Queensmead Primary had previously shared their experiences of the Greenwood Academies Trust campsite in a video presentation. Their contribution made such an impact that a Director from WWT offered the Trust the opportunity to host the pop-up wetland as a gesture of thanks.

The experience was met with enthusiasm from pupils, who were able to engage directly with wildlife habitats and environmental learning in a way that brought the curriculum to life. The project also gained wider attention, with regional news outlet Central News visiting the school to capture the excitement and share the story with a wider audience.

Initiatives like this are a key part of Greenwood Academies Trust’s commitment to broadening opportunities for pupils, ensuring that all children - regardless of background – can benefit from memorable, high-quality experiences that support both personal development and academic learning.
