The Trust celebrates it's annual Academies shield event

On Wednesday 26 April the Weston Favell Academy hosted the annual Academies Shield for all nine secondary Academies sponsored by the Greenwood Academies Trust (GAT). Over 450 pupils from the following Academies took part in the competition:

1. The City of Derby Academy

2. The City of Peterborough Academy

3. The Houghton Regis Academy

4. The Kingswood Secondary Academy

5. The Nottingham Academy

6. The Nottingham Girls’ Academy

7. The Skegness Academy

8. The Stanground Academy

9. The Weston Favell Academy

Each Academy put forward 40-50 Year 8 and 9 pupils who took part in football, dodgeball, netball and hockey plus a university-style academic challenge to test general knowledge. The event was held at the Weston Favell Academy in Northampton. The Academy has high quality facilities including a full size 3G pitch, a swimming pool, indoor basketball court and substantial grass pitches.

The Academies Shield fits perfectly with the Trust’s theme this term which is all about celebrating GAT Champions. The event is a great example of how the Trust is enhancing the competitive sporting opportunities for pupils. As well as developing technical skills and the competition will also support the social, personal and cultural development of pupils.

Jamie Kilner, Director of Sport for the Trust, said: “The sport departments within our Academies have extensive expertise and enthusiasm for sport and this inter-Academy competition demonstrates our commitment to providing competitive sporting experiences for pupils across the Trust. In addition to enhancing sporting skills, the pupils that attend this event develop emotionally, culturally and socially, as a result of working with pupils from Academies in other regions. In many ways, this is the most important feature of the festival and reinforces the overarching aims of the Trust.”

The Academies Shield is a great opportunity for pupils to work in competitive teams and showcase their talents. We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part and well done to the winners! #GATchampions
