Celebrating the Summer of World Athletics

This summer the UK is hosting the Athletics World Championships and the World Para Athletics Championships. This is the first time that the two events have been held back-to-back.

The Trust is celebrating this “Summer of World Athletics” through the GAT Champions theme this term.

Academies are making use of Starting Blocks free education programme which provides lots of fun and free athletics-themed resources for teachers to use in their classrooms that harness the excitement of the upcoming Summer of World Athletics.

Academies will also be involved in two Trust-wide athletics events:

  • On Friday 16 June, over 500 Year 5 and 6 pupils will take part in various traditional indoor athletics events including soft javelin, standing long jump speed bounce and vertical jump, alongside a plethora of sprint and obstacles races.
  • On Friday 30 June, over 200 Year 8 and 9 pupils, will take part in various athletics events including shot put, javelin, long jump, discus and high jump as well as track and field events (100m through to 1500m) and a relay.

These events are just two examples of how the Trust is enhancing the competitive sporting opportunities for pupils. As well as developing technical skills the competitions also support the social, personal and cultural development of pupils.
