Celebrating the Rio Olympics 2016!

This summer, the Greenwood Academies Trust has been celebrating the Olympic and Paralympic values and exploring Brazilian culture.

Below is a short video which showcases some of the events and activities that have taken place.

See below details of the extensive programme of events and activities:

Trust Wide

Primary Sports Hall Athletics

Date: Friday 17 June
Time: 10am – 3pm
Venue: Braunstone Leisure Centre, Leicester

Over 500 Year 5 and 6 pupils from 17 primary academies will take part in various traditional indoor athletics events including soft javelin, standing long jump speed bounce and vertical jump, alongside a plethora of sprint and obstacles races.

Secondary Athletics

Date: Friday 8 July
Time: 10am – 3pm
Venue: Princess Royal Arena, Boston

Over 200 Year 8 and 9 pupils, from eight secondary Academies will take part in various athletics events including shot put, javelin, long jump, discus and high jump as well as track and field events (100m through to 1500m) and a relay.

East Coast

A Festival of Sport and Culture

Date: Thursday 30 June
Time: 10am – 2pm
Venue: Skegness Junior Academy

Over 200 Year 2 and 3 pupils from the five primary academies on the East Coast will be taking part in an opening ceremony and representing one of the continents which will involve music, drama and dance. Sporting events will then follow. Pupils from the Skegness Academy will be supporting the event.

Peterborough

Big Learning Days

Dates: Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 July
Venue: Stanground Academy

Year 5 pupils will be taking part in activities provided by curriculum staff around an Olympic theme.

Race to Rio

Venue: City of Peterborough Academy

During the summer term, each form group across the academy is competing to gain miles to get to Rio first. Miles can be gained through attendance at extra-curricular clubs across the school, culminating in an awards ceremony at the end of the term with winners collecting prizes! Each week in tutorial time pupils will be updating the miles and learning about the cultural experience the Olympics provides.   

Race to Rio

Date: 20th - 27th June 
Venue: Dogsthorpe Academy

Dogsthorpe Academy are celebrating their 'Road to Rio' with a whole school sports week. The week will begin with an opening ceremony followed by competitive sports in their house groups. The activities will involve track and field competitions including a festival of dance at a local theatre with many other Peterborough schools. To conclude the week the school will host a sports day and hold a closing awards ceremony when the winning house will be announced!

Date: 28 June - Opening Ceremony
Date: 29 June  -  Dance workshops for all pupils
Date: 30 June  - Years 4, 5 and 6 Sports Day (in the morning) 
                         - Early Years, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 Sports Day (in the afternoon)
Date 1 July - Closing Ceremony
Date 5 July - Elite Sports Day

Northamptonshire / Houghton Regis/ Corby

Olympic Sports Days

Date: 4 and 11 July
Venue: Danesholme Junior Academy

Road to Rio

Date: Term 6
Venue: Woodvale Primary Academy

During the summer term, pupils will take part in various sports categories and events which have specific outcomes, allowing participants to gain a variety of skills and experiences. The key learnings for children are to gain an understanding of the rules of these sports and also to develop the skills and understanding to be able to compete in them. All sessions are underpinned by reminding children of each of the sporting values and their meaning.

Rio Dance Workshops

Date: Thursday 16 June
Venue: Kingswood Primary Academy

Each class has chosen a different country that will be participating in the Olympics and the pupils will learn a cultural dance from that country. There will be an ‘Opening Ceremony’ in the morning and a ‘Closing Ceremony’ that afternoon during which pupils will perform the dances to each other.

Rio Dance Workshops

Date: Monday 27 June
Venue: Corby Primary Academy

Each class has chosen a different country that will be participating in the Olympics and the pupils will learn a cultural dance from that country. There will be an ‘Opening Ceremony’ in the morning and a ‘Closing Ceremony’ that afternoon during which pupils will perform the dances to each other.

Nottingham / Derby / Leicester

Race for Life

Date: Wednesday 20 July
Venue: Nottingham Academy

Pupils from the primary phase will be participating in a Race for Life event to raise money for Cancer Research UK. All pupils from Foundation Stage 2 to Year 6 will participate and receive a special Race for Life medal.  

Sporting Legacy Challenge

Date: Term 6
Venue: Skegby Junior Academy

Pupils have various challenges to complete during the summer term.

Theatre of the Oppressed

Date: Term 6
Venue: Nottingham Academy

Pupils in Years 8 and 9 will be focussing on the work of Augusto Boal, Brazilian creator of the 'Theatre of the Oppressed' movement and a million dynamite socially aware theatre techniques.

Olympic Week and World Market

Date: w/c 27th June
Venue: Queensmead Primary Academy

Children will be making a range of crafts/ enterprise projects to sell to raise money as well as each class taking a country to study and support culminating in an Olympic parade with flags etc.
