8 Academies compete in football festival

Today (Tuesday, 14 March) the Kingswood Secondary Academy will host the first Inter Academy Football Festival for eight secondary Academies sponsored by the Greenwood Academies Trust (GAT).

Over 160 pupils from the City of Peterborough Academy, the Nottingham Academy, the Nottingham Girls’ Academy, the Skegness Academy, the Weston Favell Academy, the Stanground Academy, the Houghton Regis Academy and the Kingswood Secondary Academy will take part in the Festival. Each academy will put forward a total of 20 Year 8 boys and girls.

The festival will be supported by Kathryn Evans, a former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics Games (2000 and 2004) and is also a double British champion in the 200m individual medley (2001 and 2002). Kathryn is currently overseeing the development of Girls’ Football for the Youth Sport Trust and is already working alongside PE teams across the Trust to develop girls’ character through football.

In addition, Amber Wildgust, Football Development Officer for Northamptonshire Football Association, will attend the festival. Amber will be a huge inspiration to the Sports Leaders from Kingswood Academy that will referee the matches, having started her coaching career after completing the UK Sports Leaders course whilst at school.

Jamie Kilner, Director of Sport at the Trust, said: “The sport departments within our secondary academies have extensive expertise and enthusiasm for sport and this Inter Academy Football Festival is just one example of our commitment to providing competitive sporting experiences for students across the Trust.“Football is hugely popular across all our academies and this festival will enable students to enhance their skills even further. We are extremely grateful to have Kathryn Evans and Amber Wildgust supporting this event as they are both committed to inspiring students to use sport to promote health and wellbeing."

This festival fits perfectly with the Trust’s campaign for this term which is all about supporting young people to ‘grow into the right career’. Kathryn and Amber are positive role models and will be able to talk to pupils about a range of careers available in football both on and off the pitch.
